Dr. Kaisra Esmail was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She completed her undergraduate degree at McGill Univesity, where she excelled academically and was accepted into medical school a year early at the University of Calgary. She decided to pursue the Leaders in Medicine program, obtaining a Masters degree focusing on medical education at the same time as her Medical degree. She completed her Ophthalmology residency at the renowned Ottawa Eye Institute, where she served as Chief Resident and won multiple prestigious awards, including the Ontario Medical Association Resident Achievement Award, Academy of Medicine of Ottawa Resident Achievement Award, and the Faculty of Medicine Award in Education. During her time in Ottawa, she was on the board of directors of the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario (PARO) and Resident Doctors of Canada (RDoC).

Dr. Esmail has a passion for medical education, and has been involved in training allied health care providers, medical students, and residents. She has performed research in the area, both during her Masters degree and as a resident physician. She has also served as an examiner for the Medical Council of Canada. 

 

Dr. Esmail is interested in international health care. She traveled to Tanzania to help set up clinics in smaller under-served locations, and spent time at the Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology in India. She has also worked in Iqaluit, Nunavut, providing medical and surgical care to the area.

 

When Dr. Esmail is not busy helping patients, she enjoys yoga, cycling, scuba diving, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is excited to be back in her home province of Alberta to provide comprehensive ophthalmic care.
